MIDDLETOWN -- Research has shown that one in four students will be bullied during their schools years. For students at Keigin and Woodrow Wilson middle schools in Middletown, the “No Bully Zone” program is working to reduce that statistic. In September 2009, the Middlesex County Community Foundation (MCCF) Council of Business Partners partnered with Rushford, one of the state’s leading providers of positive youth development and prevention services, to offer the program that teaches students how to identify, address and report incidents of bullying.

The rigors of medical training sharpen a doctor’s ability to diagnose and treat a wide variety of human afflictions. However, drug abuse and addiction are often insufficiently covered in medical school curricula, despite the fact that drug use affects a wide range of health conditions and drug abuse and addiction are themselves major public health issues. To improve drug abuse and addiction training of future physicians, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, today unveiled a series of new teaching tools, through its Centers of Excellence for Physician Information Program (NIDA CoEs), at the Association of American Medical Colleges 2009 Annual Meeting’s ``Innovations in Medical Education’’ Exhibit in Boston.

Rushford launches radio campaign aimed at preventing underage drinking

Rushford recently launched a radio campaign aimed at preventing underage drinking. The public service announcement, which is airing on 96.5 WTIC/FM, features radio personality Damon Scott. The campaign is being funded by grant funding Rushford received from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to establish underage drinking task forces in several communities to address the problem of underage drinking. prevention. Billboard raises awareness of fatal consequences of underage drinking

Rushford's prevention department is using billboards to help raise awareness of the consequences of underage drinking. The billboards are located on West Main Street in Meriden and on Route 9 in Middletown. The billboards are paid for by two grants (Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grants (SPF SIG) the organization received from the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to help prevent underage drinking in Middletown and Meriden. Sheryl Sprague, Rushford prevention manager, and her staff are collaborating with local law enforcement, school officials, youth, community leaders, universities and businesses in an effort to create an awareness and understanding of underage drinking and its consequences as well as to encourage individuals, families, and the community to address this issue. These efforts include the billboard messages along with other advertisements that promote the importance of preventing underage drinking.
